Music is a big part of SNL. It is where
people get introduced to new acts and old favourites return to shine. Like most
lists, this one is pretty biased because a lot of it has to do with my own
music tastes. I tried to go beyond just liking the song though, I wanted to see
energy and engagement with the audience. I am less impressed with the recent
trend of adding lots of settings and digital screens to enhance performances.
Also, in the last couple of years, as I get older, I am not the key demographic
of 95% of the recent music acts, so they are not on this list. If you want to
see some of the list in action, please watch Questlove’s documentary Ladies
& Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music. The opening montage is simply
breathtaking. If you have a VPN, here is the American link: Click here.
HONORABLE MENTION
ASHLEE SIMPSON - “PIECES OF ME”
EPISODE: S30E03 (10.23.2004)
HOST: Jude Law
This is the infamous lipsync performance. I don’t
know what Ashlee Simpson was planning on singing but the track for “Pieces of
Me” played instead. She responded by doing a little ho-down, walking off stage
and blaming others. Classic

HONORABLE MENTION
SINEAD O’CONNOR - “WAR”
EPISODE: S18E02 (10.03.1992)
HOST: Tim Robbins
Performance-wise, she is haunting and still with
some nervous shaking. Of course, it is the conclusion that is noteworthy – ripping
a photo of the pope in half.

30. LADY GAGA
“ABRACADABRA”
EPISODE: S50E14 (03.08.2025)

After some “Shallows” piano stuff, Lady Gaga is
back to her “Poker Face” form with something visually interesting and a catchy
tune.

29. NOAH KAHAN
“STICK SEASON”
EPISODE: S49E06 (12.02.2023)
HOST: Emma Stone
It was this performance that made me aware of this
artist. He had a bit of a Mumford & Sons vibe. Love the lyrics. Noah has
fun despite standing still.

28. TOM PETTY & THE HEARTBREAKERS
“THE WAITING”
EPISODE: S08E13 (02.19.1983)
HOST: Howard Hesseman
Tom Petty has performed eight times on SNL. Every
time it rocks but I like the tone of
this one the best. There is a bit more rawness to it.

EPISODE: S35E05 (11.07.2009)

I know “All Too Well” is the typical pick as it is
longest performance in SNL history at 10 minutes, but I like this one more. Sue
me.

“CRAZY IN LOVE”
EPISODE: S28E20 (05.17.2003)

“FAT LIP”
EPISODE: S27E02 (10.06.2001)

I don’t know how they have the energy to jump like

20. LINKIN PARK

18. COUNTING CROWS
“ROUND HERE”
EPISODE: S19E11 (01.15.1994)
HOST: Sara Gilbert
So the band credits SNL with their success. Their
album sales skyrocketed after their performance as many did not know of them.
Weirdly, you can only find the dress rehearsal version in reruns even though
the live performance was so much more impressive. I luckily have the live
performance somehow.

“THE GREAT BEYOND”
EPISODE: S25E08 (12.11.1999)

11. FOO FIGHTERS
“ALL MY LIFE”
EPISODE: S28E13 (02.22.2003)
HOST: Christopher Walken
Dave Grohl still enjoys the fact that he had
Christopher Walken introduce them with the emphasis on the “Fi” in Foo
Fighters. Grohl has appeared on SNL the most times with 16, either singing or
behind the drum kit. Many to choose from, I like this one best.

10. DEVO
“SATISFACTION”
EPISODE: S04E02 (10.14.1978)

2. PAUL SIMON
“DIAMONDS ON THE SOLES
OF HER SHOES”
EPISODE: S12E05 (11.22.1986)

Performing with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, this is
just a great looking performance of a great tune. I think Paul had been on SNL
around 14 times.

1. THE BLUES BROTHERS
“SOUL MAN”
EPISODE: S04E06 (11.18.1978)
HOST: Carrie Fisher
There’s nothing more SNL than their own homegrown
talent taking the stage as the official musical guest. I’m always surprised at
John Belushi’s cartwheel.
