These are sketches from Season 11 to 20. This is
the decade where Dana Carvey and Phil Harman shine. This is also the decade
when I started watching SNL.
20. TRANSIT WORKERS
EPISODE: S18E11 (01.16.1993)
HOST: Harvey Keitel
MUSICAL GUEST: Madonna
It’s a silly gag but is quite typical of New York
subway announcements. This explains a lot.

19. SASSY’S SASSIEST BOYS
EPISODE: S19E05 (10.30.1993)
HOST: Christian Slater
MUSICAL GUEST: The Smashing Pumpkins
I don’t know why Phil Hartman saying ‘sassy’ is so
funny, but it just is. I also enjoy Mike Myers’ Joey Lawrence impression.

18. NUDE BEACH
EPISODE: S14E02 (10.15.1988)
HOST: Matthew Broderick
MUSICAL GUEST: The Sugarcubes
This one got a lot of angry phone calls back in the
day. That happens when the word ‘penis’ is said more than 40 times. This was
written by Conan O’Brien and Robert Smigel. Juvenile and funny.

17. KARL’S VIDEO
EPISODE: S19E03 (10.09.1993)
HOST: Jeff Goldblum
MUSICAL GUEST: Aerosmith
This one is well cast with David Spade as a video
store clerk with too much information. Steven Tyler is a great capper.

16. THE HONEST MAN

15. MUSICIANS FOR
FREE-RANGE CHICKENS
EPISODE: S16E18 (04.20.1991)
HOST: Steven Segal
MUSICAL GUEST: Michael Bolton
SNL did a few of these, but this is one of the
best. Michael Bolton gives his all. Chris Farley as part of Wilson Phillips is
perfect. That must have been a quick change for Dana Carvey to go from Casey
Kasem to Bob Dylan in the same sketch.

14. 16TH ANNUAL STAR TREK
CONVENTION
EPISODE: S12E08 (12.20.1986)
HOST: William Shatner
MUSICAL GUEST: Lone Justice
I have a feeling that Shatner had been wanting to
say this to Trekkies for years: “Get a life . . . It’s just a TV show . . . You’ve
turned a little job I did as a lark into a colossal waste of time.” (My SNL
fandom is different.)

13. SPORTS BEAT
EPISODE: S19E15 (03.12.1994)
HOST: Nancy Kerrigan
MUSICAL GUEST: Aretha Franklin
There was so much attention given to Nancy Kerrigan
at the Olympics that other stories were ignored. You can hear the bitterness of
the other two medalists.

9. PEPPER BOYS
EPISODE: S20E04 (10.22.1994)
HOST: Dana Carvey
MUSICAL GUEST: Edie Brickell
Who would have thought pepper grinding could be
that sexual? Adam Sandler is a slow learner.

Christopher Walken’s wide eyes and predictions are
pretty entertaining.

6. RON’S WINGS ‘N’ THINGS
EPISODE: S17E04 (10.26.1991)
HOST: Christian Slater
MUSICAL GUEST: Bonnie Raitt
I love all the ways the restaurant tries to keep
Christian Slater from eating the super fire hot wings.

5. MASSIVE HEAD WOUND HARRY
EPISODE: S17E06 (11.16.1991)
HOST: Linda Hamilton
MUSICAL GUEST: Mariah Carey
Very gross and very funny. Apparently the prop
people added more meat to the wound which caused the dog to get more aggressive
with the prosthetic.

4. SUCCINCTLY SPEAKING
EPISODE: S13E08 (12.19.1987)
HOST: Paul Simon

Phil Hartman rarely breaks but he absolutely loses
it as Frankenstein.

3. THE SINATRA GROUP
EPISODE: S16E11 (01.19.1991)

Phil Hartman shines as Frank Sinatra making fun of
his guests. He is so slick.

2. THE DENISE SHOW
EPISODE: S19E04 (10.02.1993)
HOST: Shannen Doherty
MUSICAL GUEST: Cypress Hill
I love the premise of this show and its different
segments. This was back when you could actually have a public access show like
this.

1. CHIPPENDALES
EPISODE: S16E04 (10.27.1990)
HOST: Patrick Swayze
MUSICAL GUEST: Mariah Carey
Chris Farley is fearless. He will do anything for a
laugh. Farley is also surprisingly athletic. This dance off with Patrick Swayze
is simply incredible.
