GENRE: Action/Comedy
RATING: PG-13 for sexual content, language and violence
RUNTIME: 1 hour and 47 minutes
STARRING: Will Ferrell (Talladega Nights, Step Brothers)
Mark Wahlberg (Date Night, Three Kings)
DIRECTOR: Adam McKay (Anchorman, Step Brothers )
WRITERS: Adam KcKay (Talladega Nights)
Chris Henchy (Land of the Lost)
PLOT: Two desk-job cops take an opportunity to become the city’s top cops but things obviously don’t work out as planned.
FIVE OBSERVATIONS:
1 The concept was really funny and had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, there are too many areas where the movie drags along. The beginning was great, the middle was okay and the end was dull. Not a good progression.
2 While Mark Wahlberg might be louder, Will Ferrell takes full control of this film. Thankfully, he is genuinely funny throughout. Wahlberg was funny when interacting with Eva Mendes (Hitch) though.
3 The bad guy and the evil plot were boring. I find Steve Coogan less and less funny every time I see him. He was great in 2008 with Hamlet 2 and Tropic Thunder but now I find his idiot behavior so predictable. The evil plot also didn’t seem like too much of a threat to the city at all. Poor writing there.
4 Samuel L Jackson and Dwayne Johnson are simply awesome as the cliché over-confident top cops. Their scenes are short but sweet.
5 This one scene where some cops are quietly fighting during a wake is one of the funniest things I have seen in a long long time. I was in tears laughing. I wish the rest of the movie was like this.
RECOMMENDATION: Wait for TBS
