TV: Fall 2011 Preview

The new fall season is coming soon. Like I do every year, I thought I would let you know what I’m looking forward to. There are a couple that I’m excited about and a bunch that I will give a try. I not as optimistic this year; maybe it’s because only two of the eleven I picked last year made it to season 2 (Boardwalk Empire & Hawaii 5-0). Here’s hoping that some of the fresh blood this year will stick around since this is most likely the last year for shows like Chuck and House. In my write ups I say 'People Involved', that refers to people I recognize in the cast and enjoy their work, they are not necessarily the 'stars' of the show. Anyway here’s the new stuff.

SHOWS I'M EXCITED TO SEE

Wednesdays at 8pm
(NBC) premieres Sept 14
Premise:
Comedy about two new parents who struggle to juggle their career, their marriage and their baby (not literally – I think)
People involved:
Christina Applegate (Samantha Who) & Will Arnett (Arrested Development) star; Emily Spivey (SNL, Parks & Rec) and Lorne Michaels (SNL) produce.
Why excited:
This looks like a top-notch cast and production team. I have loved all the teasers and trailers so far.

Wednesdays at 8:30pm
(NBC) premieres Sept 14
Premise:
Workplace comedy set in a public relations firm where the two top executives are on the rebound.
People involved:
Hank Azaria (Simpsons) & Anthony Stewart Head (Buffy) star; John Enborn (Party Down) produces.
Why excited:
I like workplace comedies for some reason. Hank Azaria is pretty funny and it will be fun to see Giles again.

Thursdays at 9pm
(CBS) premieres Sept 22
Premise:
Crime thriller about a presumed dead former CIA agent who teams up with a mysterious billionaire to stop violent crimes.
People involved:
Michael Emerson (Lost) & Jim Caviezel (Passion n the Christ) star; JJ Abrams & Brian Burk (Lost) and Jonathan Nolan (The Dark Knight) produces.
Why excited:
Ben from Lost is in it as well as a top notch production team is behind it. I don’t care if it’s a crime procedural; I’m there.

SHOWS I'M IFFY ABOUT

Tuesdays at 9pm
(CW) premieres Sept 13
Premise:
Thriller about a girl on the run who hides out by posing as her identical twin sister who is missing only to learn her sister’s life was just as dangerous.
People involved:
Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy, the Vampire Slayer) & Nestor Carbonell (Lost) star
Why iffy:
Worried that it might skew too young being on The CW, and that the production value may falter as well. Premise sounds interesting though.

Mondays at 10pm
(NBC) premieres Sept 19
Premise:
Drama set in the early ‘60s around the legendary Playboy Club in Chicago where mobsters and politicos stare at the bunnies.
People involved:
David Krumholtz (Numbers) stars; Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind) produces; Alan Taylor (Mad Men) directs.
Why iffy:
Don’t know if NBC can match the ‘60s precision of Mad Men and the content might be a little too risqué but still intriguing nonetheless.

Tuesdays at 9pm
(FOX) premieres Sept 20
Premise: Comedy about a girl, who after a bad breakup, moves in with three single guys. Hilarity is sure to ensue.
People involved:
Zooey Deschanel (500 Days of Summer) stars.
Why iffy:
A non-animated comedy on Fox has a short shelf life and the premise is plain but Zooey Deschanel is so darn adorable and sweet.

Mondays at 8pm
(FOX) premieres Sept 26
Premise:
Action/drama about a family who goes back in time to prehistoric Earth as part of an experiment to save the human race.
People involved:
Jason O’Mara (Life on Mars) stars; Steven Spielberg (Jurassic Park) and Brannon Braga (24) produces.
Why iffy:
This should have been on last fall; I’m worried too much tinkering may have crippled the show. Even with Spielberg producing, it seems too expensive to stay on the network.

Wednesdays at 8:30pm
(ABC) premieres Sept 28
Premise:
Comedy about a single father who tries to protect his daughter from the evils of the world by moving from New York to the suburbs.
People involved:
Jeremy Sisto (Six Feet Under) & Alan Tudyk (Firefly) star
Why iffy:
Worried it might be too much like The Middle as the premise is pretty standard. I do like Alan Tudyk however, so I will give it a try.

Thursdays at 8:30pm
(CBS) premieres Sept 29
Premise:
Comedy about the unlikely friendship between a refined writer and and unrefined personal trainer.
People involved:
Kevin Dillon (Entourage), Ryhs Darby (Flight of the Conchords) Dave Foley (Newsradio) & Mary Lynn Rajskub (24) star
Why iffy:
The premise seems pretty standard and its timeslot is competitive but the actors including make it better.

Mondays at 10pm
(SHOWTIME) premieres Oct 2
Premise:
A political thriller where a woman suspects a returned POW is in fact plotting a terrorist attack on US soil.
People involved:
Claire Daines (My So-Called Life), Mandy Patinkin (Dead Like Me) & Damien Lewis (Band of Brothers) star; Howard Gordon & Alex Gansa (24) produce.
Why iffy:
It looks like a thriller in the same vein as Rubicon last year except the POW torture is a little much and Rubicon only lasted one season.

Chuck is moving to Fridays? This just wont work with my weekly schedule. I need that as my cheer-me-up-monday-is-over-get-on-with-the-week show.

Will give Homeland a try just to see Mandy Patinkin of the never to be forgotten "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
