Emmy 2023 Recap

I liked the way the 75th Emmy Awards celebrated the history of television. I enjoyed the reunions on the carefully recreated sets, although some looked sadly too old (poor Norm). The announcer previewed upcoming reunions but some them took up to 90 minutes before they were on stage (it sure took a while for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler to finally appear). There wasn’t too much presenter banter, except maybe the cast of Martin. Having host Anthony Anderson’s mom cut off speeches was an interesting touch. I was so thankful she put an end to Jennifer Coolidge’s inane speech (so annoyed she won over Rhea Seehorn). Anderson got some chuckles but at least kept the night flowing nicely. I liked Christina Applegate’s entrance response (although audience, if you stand for everything, it kind of diminishes the impact). In the speeches, I enjoyed John Oliver’s plea for Pokemon cards and Kieran Culkin wanting babies and giving up on his jacket.

It would have been a miracle, but still sad Better Call Saul went away empty handed. I guess they are the new The Wire who also got nothing despite being a critically acclaimed masterpiece. I got 23 out of 24 categories which is not that shocking as the show was so predictable this year. I honestly think that voters just find one show they watch and then give them every award instead of weighing the performances of others. I found it interesting that Succession won best writing and directing when the “Long, Long Time” episode of Last of Us was voted as one of the 75 most impactful moments of Television and Succession was nowhere to be found on that list.

The Bear is not a comedy. It is ludicrous that the 30-minute running-time qualifies them for that. I don’t find myself laughing during The Bear, I’m way to anxious and stressed out to have time to laugh. I laugh more during Succession. Lead Comedy Actor should go to who the funniest actor is, not the one who intensely cooks and worries about living up to his family’s expectations. I like The Bear, but put in the drama section. I also like Succession but I’m glad others will get to play next year. I think they should limit how many televised nominations a show can get so they can spread the love a little more.

Okay, rants over, here were the winners:
