Film: Invictus

GENRE:
Drama/Biography

RATING: PG-13 for brief strong language

RUNTIME: 2 hours and 14 minutes

STARRING: Morgan Freeman (The Dark Knight)

Matt Damon (The Informant!)

DIRECTOR: Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino)

WRITER: Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes)

PLOT: Nelson Mandela wants the national rugby team to win the World Cup to help his apartheid-torn land

FIVE OBSERVATIONS:

1 Morgan Freeman is captivating as Nelson Mandela. Love the accent. Love the glow in his eyes. Beautifully done.

2 I thought I would be annoyed by Matt Damon’s accent. I wasn’t. His eyebrows annoyed me. Watch his first meeting with Mandela; creepy eyebrows.

3 Even for a cliché underdog sports flick, this one still works. Emotional if not predictable.

4 Clint Eastwood uses the slow motion a little too often. Slow mo on the field to hear the grunts and cracking of ribs during rugby play = good. Slow mo during a celebration in a bar with patron jumping up and down = lame.

5 The score was powerful, but the music choices were laughable and reminded me of Michael W Smith sentimentalism.

RECOMMENDATION: Rent it on DVD
