Film: John Wick Chapter 4

GENRE: Action
RATING: R for lots of violence and some language
RUNTIME: 2 hours and 49 minutes
PLATFORM: Movie Theatre
STARRING: Keanu Reeves (The Matrix, Speed, Toy Story 4, 47 Ronin)
Bill Skarsgard (It, Eternals); Donnie Yen (Rogue One, Ip Man, Mulan)
DIRECTOR: Chad Stahelski (John Wick 1-3)
WRITERS: Shay Hatten (John Wick 3); Michael Finch (Hitman: Agent 47)
PLOT: John Wick is on a mission to take down The High Table.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I’ve enjoyed the first three John Wick films.

STORY STUFF: There is some good world building going on amongst the plethora of fight sequences. I found the first fight sequence in Osaka goes on a little long. There are three takeaways I have from this film. 1. If you own an assassin’s hotel, don’t bother glass encasing your art, it’s just going to get destroyed. 2. It takes a whole lot of violence for German dance clubbers to stop dancing and leave. 3. There is no police presence at the Arc de Triomphe or anywhere else on Paris streets.

ACTING STUFF: Just a lot of people beating each other up. Reeves performs well and gives an occasional ‘yeah’. Laurence Fishburne is over the top as usual. Ian McShane is his classy self along with the final performance of Lance Reddick. Skarsgard is perfectly slimy. Yen also brings a lot to the table as a blind assassin.

ARTISTIC STUFF: I really noticed the production value of this film. While the first John Wick was pretty low key, this one goes all out. There is great use of scale and colour. I even enjoyed the ceiling fan in a particular scene. There is also a great bird’s eye view of a bunch of gunplay in a French house. The action sequences a pretty similar to previous films but if it ain’t broke . . .

VERDICT: Four stars out of five
SEE IT IF: You have enjoyed previous John Wick films.

Film: A Good Person

GENRE: Drama
RATING: R for language and lots of drugs
RUNTIME: 2 hours and 9 minutes
PLATFORM: Movie Theatre
STARRING: Florence Pugh (Little Women, Midsommar, Black Widow)
Morgan Freeman (Shawshank Redemption, The Dark Knight, RED)
DIRECTOR: Zach Braff (Going in Style, Garden State, Wish I Was Here)
WRITER: Braff (Garden State, Wish I Was Here)
PLOT: Allison’s life falls apart after surviving a fatal accident.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I am a huge fan of Zach Braff and his work.

STORY STUFF: This film is a compelling look at addiction and how hard it is to move forward. This is definitely the darkest and saddest of Braff’s films but I was engrossed the majority of the time. I wish there were a few more lighter moments and that the running time was a tad shorter. The intensity of the addiction plays out well. There are also a number of heartfelt speeches that got me in the feels.

ACTING STUFF: The cast is incredible. Pugh plays the messed up Allison perfectly; she is riveting to watch. Freeman is always a pro and I could listen to him talk for hours. Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) holds her own as an angry daughter trying to cope. I also enjoyed the work of Chinaza Uche (Dickinson) who I’ve never seen before. Molly Shannon (SNL) is annoying at times but I believe she’s supposed to be this time. Braff gets the most out of his ensemble as everyone brings their “A” game to this film.

ARTISTIC STUFF: While there a couple songs that really resonate (the first song of the end credits), the soundtrack is not as wonderful as Braff’s previous efforts. There are always a few cinematography flourishes in Braff’s work that make me see things from a different perspective; this film has some great ones especially in some of the drugged up scenes.

VERDICT: Four stars out of five
SEE IT IF: You enjoy drama and Zach Braff’s previous films.

Film: Scream VI

GENRE: Horror
RATING: R for bloody violence & language
RUNTIME: 2 hours and 3 minutes
PLATFORM: Movie Theatre
STARRING: Melissa Barrera (Scream V, In the Heights)
Jenna Ortega (Wednesday); Courtney Cox (Friends, Scream)
DIRECTORS: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett (Scream, V/H/S)
WRITERS: James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, Amazing Spiderman)
Gary Busick (Scream V, Ready or Not)
PLOT: The survivors of Woodsboro are now in New York City and still being terrorized by Ghostface.

FULL DISCLOSURE: This is only horror franchise I watch.

STORY STUFF: Scream VI is fun with its meta horror antics. It sticks to its formula of big murder at the start, a run-down of the rules, lots of chases around rooms, and a big location for the final showdown. Of course, there are twists put in to add to the fun. I always like the mystery of who is behind the mask. There were a few things that bothered me. Too many people are surviving multiple knife wounds. Why does someone have a gigantic ladder in their small apartment? Why don’t characters text instead of calling? Characters should really spend more time on Ancestry.com. I would hope that after someone killed a bunch of people in say an Austin Powers mask, the city would stop selling Austin Powers masks, for a little while at least.

ACTING STUFF: Barrera and Ortega play the heroines well though it is hard to separate Ortega from Wednesday Addams at times. Cox keeps falling into the same Gale Weathers patterns but that’s fine for a legacy character. I found Henry Czerny (Mission: Impossible) as odd casting. I enjoyed newcomer Jack Champion (Avatar 2) but got tired of Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend’s Wedding) pretty quickly.

ARTISTIC STUFF: For a film touting New York as its locale, there were only a couple scenes that made good use of it: a bodega confrontation and the subway. I guess Ghostface can’t be killing people in Times Square. There’s not much to say about the artistic stuff. The sound effects of the stabbings were well done?

VERDICT: Three and a half stars out of five
SEE IT IF: You’ve seen the other Scream films.

Film: Ant-Man & the Wasp - Quantumania

GENRE: Action
RATING: PG-13 for action violence and language
RUNTIME: 2 hours and 5 minutes
PLATFORM: Movie Theatre
STARRING: Paul Rudd (Ant-Man; Anchorman; Ghostbusters: Afterlife)
Jonathan Majors (Lovecraft Country); Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies)
DIRECTOR: Peyton Reed (Ant-Man; Yes Man; The Break-Up)
WRITER: Jeff Loveness (Rick and Morty episodes)
PLOT: Scott Lang and the gang end up in the Quantum Realm where they run into Kang who is determined to escape to the real world.

FULL DISCLOSURE: Just watching Marvel because I feel I have to now.

STORY STUFF: This film is apparently the start of Phase 5. Too bad I found it to be meh. The action part of the story is pretty simple with the characters just trying to meet up and escape the Quantum Realm with a couple complications thrown in. Not a fan of Kang or his tiring exposition. I did like that they went the traditional trilogy route of bringing back things from the first film. The film opens with narration that is cheekily justified. The ending narration makes no lick of sense. Why is Ant-Man talking to us? This isn’t She-Hulk.

ACTING STUFF: Luckily, Rudd is always a treat to watch. He makes the film bearable. I also enjoyed Newton as an older Cassie. Loved seeing Chidi (William Jackson Harper) is a fun role. Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer do their thing but it didn’t wow me. You probably know by now that I strongly dislike Evangeline Lilly (her short hair isn’t working either). Of the cameos, Bill Murray is just okay and I won’t spoil the other one (not counting the second end credit sequence) but he was a lot of fun though he looked awful. I do not like Majors as Kang. I just don’t find him dynamic at all. I know it is just scars but it looks like he’s forever crying. He’s a downer and makes me wish for Thanos to return.

ARTISTIC STUFF: A lot of the Quantum Realm visuals reminded me of a mix between Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars. There’s a part that looks completely lifted out of Attack of the Clones. Some of the creature designs are interesting. I enjoyed the seventies TV theme song used in the film. I wonder how much Baskin Robbins paid to be back in the thick of it; they get quite the promotion.

VERDICT: Two stars out of five
SEE IT IF: You need to keep watching Marvel like I do.

Superbowl Commercials 2023

While in Canada, we didn’t get all the expensive American Superbowl ads, there were a few that made their way up north. I really liked the Steven Martin and Ben Stiller ads for Pepsi Zero but there is a bunch of them so I didn't include them below. I enjoyed Stiller bringing back Zoolander. After some internet research, here are thirteen other ads I thought I’d share in alphabetical order:

AVOCADOS FROM MEXICO – Make It Better
Apparently everything is better when you’re naked.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w57YsiNmt90&t=30s

BUSCH LITE – Survival Skills
Nice to see Sarah McLachlan parody herself.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGZRMC3S9Ic&t=30s

CROWN ROYAL – Thank You Canada
Yeah, Americans, you listen to what Dave Grohl has to say.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUGACNfgpu4

DORITOS – Jack’s New Angle
Love the new direction for Jack Harlow. Like the cowbell comment.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BD6d5THLlUA&t=61s

DUNKIN’ DONUTS – Drive-Thru Ben
Why are J.Lo and Ben together? They don't seem to get along.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BBIX9FG6kZ0&t=1s

GENERAL MOTORS/NETFLIX – Why not an EV?
Guess they shared the cost? Only works because of Will Ferrell.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jymEz9xkPQ&t=60s

KIA – Binky Dad
I enjoyed the concept as everyone roots for the dad.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3SHwtLa2bE&t=70s

POPCORNERS – Breaking Good
Always love Walt & Jesse united. Tuco makes it tight.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMlemd6U24Y&t=60s

RAKUTEN - Clueless
Love the attention to detail but where’s Wallace Shawn?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_yGq_4xCKQ&t=60s

SAM ADAMS – Your Cousin’s Brighter Boston
Love the baseball hug and other considerate Bostonians.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDo0wX1pK4c&t=60s

T-MOBILE – New Year. New Neighbor
I like Zach Braff and Donald Faison. Fun to include Travolta.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSO-Whn2sCQ&t=60s

UBER – One Hit for Uber One
I just like that the “What Does the Fox Say” guys are on it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnySyKAoLpI&t=60s

WORKDAY – Rockstar
I agree that I should stop using this term.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ID-1mzRAew&t=60s

There you go.

Film: You People

GENRE: Comedy/Romance
RATING: R for language and some sexual material and drug content
RUNTIME: 1 hour and 57 minutes
PLATFORM: Netflix
STARRING: Jonah Hill (Superbad, Wolf of Wall Street, Don’t Look Up)
Lauren London (The Game-TV show); Eddie Murphy (Coming to America)
DIRECTOR: Kenya Barris (Black-ish)
WRITERS: Barris (Black-ish, Coming 2 America, Cheaper by the Dozen)
Jonah Hill (Mid90s, stories – 21 Jump Street, Sausage Party, Why Him?)
PLOT: Race, religion and family dynamics become a barrier for an inter-racial couple that want to get married

FULL DISCLOSURE: An interesting cast drew me in.

STORY STUFF: With all the podcast rants and references to current pop culture and Drake personas, this is definitely a modern take on Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. I will admit that I did not get a number of references as I am clueless when it comes to hip-hop anything these days. The white family trying to make connections with their new black future daughter-in-law is both funny and cringy at the same time, as is the white boyfriend trying to suck up to his future father-in-law. We get it pretty quickly but they keep giving us scene after scene with tailored uncomfortable moments.

ACTING STUFF: Hill does well falling into the fast-talking character that he developed in Superbad; except this time, he’s less crude and seems to be in love. London has some good moments but it’s all about Hill. Murphy plays the intense father well but I was hoping for some more comedic rants instead of icy stares. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss (Veep, Seinfeld) nails it as Hill’s unaware mom. David Duchovny (X-Files) plays it low-key with his obsession with Xzibit. It was fun seeing Dreyfuss and Murphy together after they appeared on SNL so many years ago.

ARTISTIC STUFF: The flashy graffiti titles and the TV-ish collage scene transitions put to hip hop music did not work for me. Just not my style. An interesting idea though. It seemed like they really wanted to show a lot of LA in this film – the Capitol Records building really stood out. Not sure if I liked that or not. Was not of a fan of Jonah Hill’s hairstyle.

VERDICT: Three stars out of five
SEE IT IF: You want some cringy laughs and aren’t easily offended.

Film: A Man Called Otto

GENRE: Drama/Comedy
RATING: PG-13 for thematic material involving suicide attempts
RUNTIME: 2 hours and 6 minutes
PLATFORM: Movie Theatre
STARRING: Tom Hanks (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood)
Mariana Trevino (Club de Cuervos); Rachel Keller (Legion, Fargo-TV show)
DIRECTOR: Marc Forster (Stranger than Fiction, Finding Neverland)
WRITER: David Magee (Finding Neverland, Life of Pi)
PLOT: A grumpy widow wants to end it all but is constantly interrupted by a young family who moves across the street.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I like Tom Hanks films. Never read the book.

STORY STUFF: While a good chunk is predictable, I was totally engaged with the story. I was thoroughly invested in Otto’s life and got some teary eyes on more than one occasion. There are some great lines throughout that make you smile and laugh. I also enjoyed the jumps back and forth between the present day and the past. Realizing afterward that the writer also did Finding Neverland, it makes sense as I got some feels from that movie as well. As I get older, I get more emotional. I also feel most of Otto’s grumpiness is totally justified although there is a physical altercation that didn’t fit at all.

ACTING STUFF: Hanks is always a treat to watch. He is so good on screen. I think he should have been a bit older though – pretty spry for his age. Trevino is the perfect dose of feistiness and works well with Hanks. Tom’s son, Truman, plays a younger version of Otto. He performs well but I thought he didn’t look that close to his dad. Colin is way more the dead ringer but was too old for this role. Also, the cat is adorable and Mike Birbiglia plays a good jerk.

ARTISTIC STUFF:
Cinematography and editing are done well. As I mentioned before, I enjoyed the blending of the past and present. There were some poor music choices here and there. I like some of the acoustic tunes but a couple of moments felt a little cheapened by the music. And again, Hanks’ character could have used more aging.

VERDICT: Four and a half stars out of five
SEE IT IF: You want some feels and enjoy Tom Hanks

2023 Golden Globes Recap

Here’s my recap of the Golden Globes last night.

·       Jerrod Carmichael was an awful host. What’s with telling everyone to keep settling down? It’s a party, not stand-up show. He’s treating the celebrities like elementary children. Didn’t find his laid-back story of being asked to host because he was black funny. I did enjoy the camera people focussing on black celebrities to see if they were vibing with it and the white celebrities looking awkward.

·       There was a panel on the side wall that kept changing photos, it was hella distracting.

·       They could cut the runtime by not putting the Abbott Elementary folks at the back of the audience so they have to snake through hundreds of people to get to the stage.

·       Jack Nicholson used to sit in the front row of the Oscars and get loads of attention. At the Golden Globes, Nicholson is replaced by Brad Pitt. (runner up is Rhianna)

·       Natasha Lyonne had the best intro of the night taking loads of time to talk about how they were on a time crunch.

·       Some of these speeches went on way too long. Jennifer Coolidge’s intro and acceptance speech was too much. I like that Michelle Yeoh won but didn’t need her life story on coming to Hollywood forty years ago up to present day.

·       I enjoyed Regina Hall calling out Kevin Costner for missing the awards then immediately finding out that he was sheltering from flooding in Santa Barbara. Ouch.

·       Even Peters gave a nice quick speech. Thanked enough people and got off the stage.

·       Enjoyed Colin Farrell’s speech and warning about not leaving him hungry at breakfast.

·       Austin Butler thanked Denzel Washington. Apparently Denzel cold-called Baz Luhrmann and told him that he had just worked on stage with Butler and Baz had to audition this guy.

·       Loved Ke Huy Quan thanking Steven Spielberg for casting him in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

·       Loved Spielberg’s explanation of why he took this long to tell his early childhood story.

·       Enjoyed Eddie Murphy’s ‘three things to know’ sign-off.

·       I got 21 out of 27 categories ‘correct’

·       Most happy about Fabelmans, Spielberg, Farrell, RRR and Abbott winning awards.

·       Most disappointed about the losses for Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul, and RRR for the Non-English Language Film.

Anyway, here were the winners:
