2023 Emmy Predictions

The Emmys are on Monday. It’s strange because it was supposed to have aired last September but was postponed due to the strikes. What’s interesting is that some of the series have nominations from their previous season. For example, The Bear has been winning a bunch of awards lately for their recently aired second season but the nominations for these awards are from their first season, hence the pilot episode nom. This also means that Better Call Saul is back in the running but will unfortunately lose to Succession (I can still hope for some miracles though). Anyway, here are my predictions:

Outstanding Drama Series

WANT TO WIN: Better Call Saul (Sad they never won anything)

Outstanding Comedy Series
Abbott Elementary | Barry | The Bear | Jury Duty | The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel | Only Murders in the Building | Ted Lasso | Wednesday

Golden Globes 2024 Recap

Here’s my recap of the Golden Globes last night.

·         Don’t know who host Jo Koy is but he was awful. Not one funny joke. It was so cringe watching him in his opening monologue. I think he was the only one laughing. Classy move to throw your writers under the bus. What an ass.

·         Koy made a comment that the Globes would show fewer shots of Taylor Swift than an NFL game. I counted a whole lot of Taylor.

·         Just like last year’s Abbot Elelmentary, maybe don’t put front runner Beef in the back so they have to walk a gauntlet of celebrities to make it to the stage.

·         I should probably watch Beef.

·         Julia Garner’s dress was so glittery; it was reflecting on her face.

·         The trophy looks different this year. And apparently heavier.

·         Watch the PDA Mark Ruffalo. Were there not enough seats so your wife had to sit your lap during the show?

·         The show thought Suits would get a bigger response. Nope.

·         I liked some of the speeches, Kieran Culkin and Robert Downey Jr. stood out to me.

·         I got 23 out of 27 categories ‘correct’

·         The Bear should be a drama. The thirty-minute run-time shouldn’t make it a comedy.

·         Surprised to see Anatomy of a Fall winning screenplay and Poor Things getting the Comedy Best Picture win.

Anyway, here were the winners:

Best Motion Picture – Drama

Golden Globes 2024 Predictions

The Golden Globes are back on Sunday but this time on CBS instead of NBC. I have no idea who votes for these things anymore as the Hollywood Foreign Press was disbanded or something. For some reason, each category has six nominees instead of the usual five which will make the predicting a little harder. It will be more interesting this year as the Emmy Awards haven’t even happened yet thanks to the summer’s strike. I’m expecting a bunch of love for Oppenheimer, Barbie, Succession, The Bear and Beef. Film: Leave the World Behind

GENRE: Drama/Thriller
RATING: R for language, drugs, some sexual content, brief blood
RUNTIME: 2 hours and 18 minutes
PLATFORM: Netflix
STARRING: Julia Roberts (Erin Brockovich, Pretty Woman, Gaslit)
Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book); Ethan Hawke (Training Day)
DIRECTOR: Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot, Homecoming)
WRITER: Esmail (Mr. Robot, Homecoming, The Resort)
PLOT: A family renting a home takes an ominous turn when it seems like the world is ending and two strangers appear at their door.

FULL DISCLOSURE: I liked Esmail’s Mr. Robot.

STORY STUFF: I found the story pretty captivating. I was intrigued as the plot kept me guessing as to what would happen next. If you are looking for answers or even a wrapped up conclusion, this may not be the film for you. There is a possible explanation near the end that when spelled out seems pretty terrifying. I do think the battery life on some of those electronics were quite unbelievable.

ACTING STUFF: Roberts gets to be quite prickly and harsh in this film but you root for anyway because she’s Julia Roberts. I really enjoyed Hawke as a dad just trying to do the right thing. Ali is mysterious and calm and he pulled me in. Myha’la who plays Ruth Scott goes a little overboard and didn’t grab me. Kevin Bacon has a small but memorable role.

ARTISTIC STUFF: The camera angles are trippy at times – a walk up some stairs is dizzying yet beautiful. There are also some great whip pans and Dutch angles. Amazing production design. The house is beautiful and I just found out was recreated on a set so they could get the shots and lighting they wanted. Pay close attention to the paintings. There is a Tesla sequence that I found darkly humourous and confirms that I never want to own one. Also, deers be eerie in this film. There’s just a lot of great visuals in this film.

VERDICT: Four stars out of five
SEE IT IF: You're fine with unanswered questions

2024 Film Preview

Here are the films that look interesting for the new year. Again, I am basing a lot of my picks on the people involved, familiarity, or an interesting plot description. My opinions may change closer to the release dates. Prepare for a number of sequels for films that came out a long time ago and films that were delayed due to the strike. Anyway, here they are:

Jan.12 Mean Girls
Will watch this after I watch the stage version again.
Feb.02 Argyle
The cast and film looks fun from the makers of the Kingsmen franchise
Mar.01 Dune: Part Two
Looking forward to Denis Villeneuve’s conclusion of this epic tale, finally
Mar.29 Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
I’m up for another romp with these old and new Ghostbusters
May.03 Deadpool 3
Love to see Ryan Reynolds return and this time with Wolverine.
May.03 The Fall Guy
Ryan Gosling is a stunt man who needs to get the girl and solve a mystery
May.17 IF
Only because I like Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski’s directing
Jun.14 Inside Out 2
The first one was awesome, hope they don’t screw this up
Jun.14 Bad Boys 4
Don’t know anything about the plot but this is apparently happening.
Jul.03 Despicable Me 4
I’m up for more Gru and his minions. Everyone’s returning.
Jul.19 Twisters
Yes, it’s a sequel to Twister. This could bomb but I’ll put it on my list.
Jul.26 Captain America: Brave New World
Time for Anthony Mackie to take on the shield for reals this time.
Sep.06 Beetlejuice 2
Don’t know why we have so many unneeded sequels but I’ll go with it.
Sep.20 Wolfs
Brad Pitt and George Clooney as lone wolves on the same job
Oct.04 Joker: Folie a Deux
Not only a sequel but also a musical this time around. Weird but sure.
Nov.22 Gladiator 2
Again, why? I guess I’ll give Ridley Scott the benefit of the doubt.
Nov.27 Wicked
Just the first part unfortunately but I still love the musical.
Dec.13 The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
The story of Helm’s Deep but not done by Peter Jackson
Dec.20 Thunderbolts
Harrison Ford leads a bunch of Marvel anti-heroes
